The aim of this education session is to:
- Help learners understand the key features of effective communication exchanges.
- Introduce the ISBAR tool as a common communication tool in clinical settings that staff from all disciplines and levels can use.
- Create an awareness of the importance of ISBAR communication tool in the clinical setting
- It aims to give staff the ability to adapt, implement and evaluate an approach to clinical communication around clinical handover in a health care setting or organization.
- The key message of the education program is to demonstrate the mechanisms and tools which are required to conduct a clear comprehensive clinical handover that is structured using a standardized format and occurs within a timely manner.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this class session the students will be expected to/ be able to:
1. Define ISBAR communication
2. Identify the advantages of ISBAR
3. Identify the importance of ISBAR and how ISBAR can enhance communication exchanges
4. Discuss examples of situations where communication can be improved, using a structured tool such as ISBAR.
5. Identify how ISBAR can be used effectively within a student’s own practice areas.
