Question: Write a short report on the manufacture of a 10ml disposable catheter syringe, prefilled, with sterile water and subsequently sterilised.

The report should include but not limited to the following points:

• Discuss the typical materials used to make each component of the syringe and why it is selected. Comment on the physical and mechanical properties required by the syringe components, in addition to biocompatibility.
• Discuss the methods of manufacture utilised and steps taken to transform virgin polymer materials into fully functional syringe components.
• Each manufacturing method has been covered in lecture notes. Sketches/ imaged can be scanned or copied from lecture notes, and inserted into the main body of the report.
• Describe in brief the filling process for a syringe using your experience or research information from additional sources. Discuss the sterilisation methods used (note: just a brief description of the sterilisation processes required).
• Discuss the printing method used to put graduations and text on the syringe (note: some syringes will have the scale moulded into it). The main focus is on the printing methods used.
