Introduction

This booklet has been designed to inform you about your internship in clinical practice and the modules and assessment strategies associated with it. It also addresses a number of key requirements in respect to each of the modules. The information contained in this booklet is by no means exhaustive. We ask you to read this booklet carefully and to read it in conjunction with the Department of Nursing and Health Care Studies Student Handbook, and The Institute of Technology’s Student Handbook.

Internship

Your internship is an integral part of the four-year BSc. (Honours) degree in Nursing program. You will spend 36 weeks as an intern in clinical practice. Learning within clinical practice provides you with the opportunity to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for the delivery of safe, efficient, effective, and compassionate nursing care. Furthermore, it provides you with the opportunity to apply and integrate the theoretical concepts in nursing that you have learned in the classroom into your practice in the clinical setting.

 Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of your internship in clinical practice, you will be able to:
1. Practice in accordance with legislation affecting nursing practice.

2. Practice within the limits of own competence and takes measures to develop own competence.

3. Conduct a systematic holistic assessment of client needs based on nursing theory and evidence-based practice.

4. Plan care in consultation with the client taking into consideration the therapeutic regimes of all members of the health care team.

5. Implement planned nursing care/interventions to achieve the identified outcomes.

6. Evaluate client progress towards expected outcomes and reviews plans in accordance with evaluation data and in consultation with the
client.

7. Establish and maintain caring therapeutic interpersonal relationships with individuals/clients/groups/communities.

8. Collaborate with all members of the health care team and document relevant information.

9. Effectively manages the nursing care of clients/groups/communities.

10. Delegate to other nurses activities commensurate with their scope of professional practice.

11. Facilitate the coordination of care.

12. Act to enhance the personal and professional development of self and others.

13. Liaise with Nurse Practice Development Team in new initiatives.
Furthermore, each clinical placement area will have its own specific

learning outcomes that clinical nursing staff will expect you to achieve.
These relate to specific skills or knowledge that the clinical nursing staff wants you to acquire before leaving the clinical placement area.

These specific learning outcomes will be contained in the ‘Undergraduate Information Folder’ that can be found in each clinical placement area. It is your responsibility to familiarise yourself with these and to put in place, with the help of your preceptor, a plan to meet them.
