Jimmy Murphyowns MurphyCarpet and Furniture Company based in a medium-sized town in Co. Cork. Jimmy recently heard that a few disgruntled employees are unhappy with their pay, overtime pay etc. He is very surprised at this because he feels he has always treated employees very well – like family, really. He operates an open-door policy and sees no need for rules, procedures, or a staff handbook since each person needs to be handled differently. There are rumours that some staff want a Trade Union to come into the company, but staff believe JimmyMurphy is likely to sack any staff who get involved with a Union as he is also known as having a short temper.

While investigating the employees who are causing problems, Jimmy discovers that three of this group of disgruntled employees are putting petrol in their own cars and not signing for it. Normally he allows employees to put petrol in their cars in lieu of overtime, she believes this is a win-win situation since they are not taxed on it.JimmyMurphydiscovers these three employees are filling their car on a weekly basis. Jimmy calls in each of the three employees separately and dismisses them without notice.

Mick Brennan has worked for MurphyCarpet and Furniture company for six years. He thinks things are badly regulated, with pay and rewards below the norm compared to other main Carpet and Furniture companies. Employees can be called in without notice at weekends to deal with rush jobs. Most employees are afraid to refuse this additional work, as JimmyMurphyis likely to sack employees for going against his requests.

Strangely, JimmyMurphy started to pay ‘Performance Rewards’ in2020, there are rumours that some carpet and furniture fitters are being rewarded more than others based on favouritism, but no one knows for sure. Mick thinks this is very unfair because he knows some employees were rewarded less than him, even though they are more qualified than him and are very hard workers.
