Why we observe and gather information formally and informally is to assist with the learning and development of children. The reason why we observe is to share it for the benefit of the child. give regular feedback to parents on the child’s progress. We also observe is to fulfill regulations.
In relation to, Regulation 5′ Health, Welfare and Development of the Child’ those working in ECCE settings need to ensure that each child’s learning, development, and well-being is facilitated within the daily life of the service through the provision of the appropriate opportunities. This would include experiences, activities, interaction, materials, and equipment. This can be documented through observations
No two children are the same; each child has a unique rate of development. In addition, no two children have the same family, cultural, or experiential backgrounds. Holistic development can be impacted by nature and nurture. Influencing factors to consider and include- Environmental-A child who lives in a rural area and may not have the opportunity to play with children of the same age or to access certain facilities, thus affecting social and emotional development.
Social- A family that is loving and affectionate and has realistic boundaries allow children to form secure bonds with parents/guardians. Cultural-Children who attend a place of worship will interact with people of common beliefs, giving them a sense of identity and a sense of belonging. This complements the theme of Aistear ‘Identity and Belonging’ Aim 2 outlines that children will have a sense of group identity where links with their family and community are acknowledged and extended.
