VIGNETTE: Styles in Becoming a Leader

Introduction – This vignette showcases different roles and their styles of performing leadership. The Charge Nurse Ms. Mary with whom I had been working in the Critical care unit with a team of 40 staff and more. The motto was to focus on what you must build competency and confidence in performing activities and to be effective. First, I will focus on how Mary’s leadership gave me enthusiasm for following her steps. The issues that shattered will be focused on the course paper in detail. In the end, I would like to compare the styles of leadership and the innovations made in various roles according to my perspective.

Factors as a good leader – I was allocated to the CCU where Nurse Mary was the charge nurse, who is very particular about documentation. She used to encourage other new nurses and students with appropriate coaching and mentoring. It is also suggested by Kopelman, that coaching may be used to overcome the problems associated with the transfer of the learning process. According to Clutterbuck and Ragins, mentoring is support, assistance, advocacy, or guidance given by one person to another in order to achieve an objective or several objectives over a period of time. This came to my notice after several years when Mary was seen as never to be appreciated for the outcome brought by her unit nurses (Mary being the backbone). Additionally, was very positive with her thoughts and work to uplift
others for better outcomes. Mary was a catalyst for me, to uplift myself as a team leader in my group. Leadership is defined as “the process of influencing others to understand and agree about what needs to be done and how to do it, and the process of facilitating (Yukl 2008)
