The emergence of new roles in the Construction industry with the adoption of BIM processes has necessitated the demand for new skillsets and knowledge from the individuals considered for these roles. One of these currently advertised roles is the position of BIM Manager.

The following list of skillsets is a combination of those that have recently been required by several job advertisements for the position of “BIM Manager/Director” by some of the major AEC companies.

This project involves writing a critical analysis report to provide evidence to prove your competency within each of these knowledge requirements and skillsets. You are required to provide detailed examples/processes/procedures/actions of how you can demonstrate these skills and knowledge previously or would do so.

Setup and direct a new BIM project

• Develop a technology asset strategy in terms of software, hardware,
  security and infrastructure?
• Provide team members with relevant support internally with an external
  interface?
• Communicate current and best practices and procedures to project staff.
• Provide technical expertise and assistance to other project teams as and
  when required.
• Liaise with the commercial team regarding injecting BIM into sub-contract
  requirements and scope documents?

Evaluate project development and capability with regard to BIM and Information Management. Identify any areas that require further skill development.

• Develop methods for assessing the competencies of staff for different roles
  develop training and knowledge upskilling pathways for the project.
• Determine the capability of potential supply chain partners.

Develop, oversee and provide governance to BIM work standards and workflows as a generic framework for work streams.

• Help the team understand the need for and successfully deliver ISO and
  BS standards, Stage 2 BIM requirements, and outcomes.?
• Ensure adherence to information exchanges, model standards, naming
  conventions, CDE workflows, the status of files, etc?
• Ensure adherence to classification, LOD, measurement requirements, etc.

Thinking widely to develop “disruptive” solutions to assist the project to achieve its goals.

• Identify and categorize project goals with the team and methods to achieve them.
• Assess the level of achievement of those goals.
• Report output of the BIM processes, identify benefits, value proposition and
  return on investment (ROI) from utilizing BIM processes for all stakeholders
  in the project lifecycle?

Coordinate design team and supply chain information including geometry and non-geometric data.

• Specific technical design issues to ask for, coordinate, and validate within the
  models, including procurement of information from specialist subcontractors?
• The procedure, order, and workflow of sharing graphical and
  non-graphical data/models/files/schedules within the team, and to other
  disciplines in the supply chain?
• Software options, work sets, component families, and parameters to
  add or any other relevant technical aspects?
  Troubleshooting of problems at both content and model levels?
• Graphical and non-graphical data for tender documents?

Disseminating BIM innovation through a push-pull process

• Any additional recommended technical features that can help innovate BIM
  processes – plugins, macros, templates, properties, integration with other
  software or databases?
• Any additional recommended operational procedures that can enhance BIM
  workflows?
• Any innovative ideas to enhance future adoption or levels of BIM?

To review and monitor the health of BIM on the project

• Ensure collaboration and work ethics in accordance with BIM workflows.
• Ensure checks and handover of digital assets to different disciplines.
• Ensure production and packaging of As-Built information upon handover from
  BIM Models?
