Background

You are working as a chemical engineer, and your manager has asked you to compare the hardness of four blends of paint as part of a wider investigation project.You are provided with samples of each of the four paint blends, and you decide to apply each blend to a piece of metal and then cure it. You have twenty-four pieces of metal and can use six for each paint blend.Applying and curing the paint to a metal in this way will simulate how the paint is generally used in the manufacturing process.

When the cured samples are available for testing, your team measures each sample set for hardness and records this data in Minitab in a column called Response.

The team also captures some additional data, such as the curing temperature of the sample and the operator that performed the data capture.

Deliverables

  • Construct a formal Minitab report for your manager. Include background details of the test and a formal conclusion (in non-technical language).
  • Perform initial basic statistical analysis of the data – generate comparison statistics and comparison charts and comment on these.
  • Conduct a 95% Confidence Hypothesis Test to test the hypothesis that the four paint blends have similar means or different means.
  • Provide a recommendation to your manager with the blend of paint that your testing has identified as being the ‘hardest’, supported by statistical evidence.
  • Recommend a second-best blend in case the first blend is not available or too expensive. Again, support your recommendation with statistical analysis.
  • The industry standard for the hardness of the paint is 20. Confirm whether both of your recommendations can achieve that standard using a 95% Confidence Hypothesis Test.
