Learning Outcomes In completing the assessment task, students are required to demonstrate their ability to:

1. Using module content which includes on-demand sessions, webinars and F2F day content, critically analyse the chosen research article as evidence to inform teaching and learning in the given context.

2. Demonstrate a critical understanding of the philosophy, principles, practices and key components underpinning evidence informed professional practice and its application in education.

3. Analyse your chosen research article under the specific headings given in terms of research design.

4. Include reference to the peer-reviewed research provided as well as to other relevant research and resources.

5. Combine written, audio and visual modes to communicate your ideas so that the audience can read and interpret the ideas or argument in a multimodal way.

6. Be structured in the same way as a written academic essay using the headings given to structure your critique, develop your argument and convey your ideas clearly.

7. Include an end slide that credits any images, video, etc used. All other references should be included as a Reference List in the word template provided. Use the College’s Harvard System for all referencing.

The structure of your recorded audio-visual essay should be as follows: In the first section of your audio-visual essay, you should set the Context with an Introductory slide. The following headings characterise the structure of a research paper/article. Use these headings to structure your presentation:

Introduction: The introduction establishes the issue or concern leading to the research by conveying information about a problem. As such, it must provide the reader with background information for the research reported in the paper. In your response you could consider any of the following questions about the research journal?

  • To what extent the author(s) have clearly introduced the research topic?

  • Is there a theoretical framework outlined in the introduction?

Review of the Literature: The literature review shares with the reader the results of other studies that are closely related to the one being undertaken. It relates a study to a larger, on-going dialogue in the literature. In this section, you could consider any of the following:

  • To what extent have the author(s) linked past literature studies to the current review and clearly identified how the literature review is linked to the proposed research questions and problem statement.
  • To what extent the authors have addressed ethical considerations. Methods: In this section of your critique, consider the following questions:
  • How did the researchers carry out the research?
  • To what extent was there a clear articulation of the type of research design used?
  • To what extent the authors have addressed ethical considerations?
  • Is the rigour of the study considered? Have potential biases been outlined?
  • Was there a clear and complete description of the method(s) used including sample, instruments, or measures and, if applicable, variables manipulated?
  • Did the section include a description of how the data were to be treated in analyses?

Results: In this section consider:

  • How did the researchers report the results of their research? Consider both the way that results are presented, and the appropriateness of the analysis techniques.
  • To what extent are the findings clearly laid out and communicated to the reader?
  • Has a thematic or statistical analysis of the results been presented?

Discussion/Conclusion of the article: The discussion section has the purpose of interpreting and evaluating the study results, giving primary emphasis to the relationship between the results and the hypotheses of the study. In the critique, the following should be considered:

  •  To what extent did researchers address any limitations in the research and discussed possible areas for further research?
  • One might also consider if the researchers discussed how their research added to existing research. Remember to include a conclusion for the audio-visual essay.

NOTE • Present all work showing a good level of English with minimal errors. Cognisance will also be taken of: – Accuracy in spelling and punctuation, grammar and syntax. – Clarity of thought and structure. – Evidence of reading/research in the field of evidence-informed practice.
