Person-Centered care can be defined “as an approach to practice that is established through the formation and fostering of therapeutic relationships between all care providers, patients, and others significant to them. Person-centered care is underpinned by values of respect for persons, individual right to self-determination, mutual respect, and understanding”. The concept of PCC can be distinguished from a traditional treatment model which views the individual as a passive receiver of medical intervention. Many health professionals were traditionally focused on the needs of the service users instead of their resources.

The concept of person-centered care has grown from the belief that people have different needs and interests. Rather than the conventional way of making medical recommendations from health professionals to a patient, the person-centered care model allows for the inclusion of the individual and their relatives in making a joint design and mutual agreement on the medical and care plans. The overall perspective of the life situation of the service user is considered to create objectives and strategies for both short and long-term monitoring.
