Learning Outcomes
In completing the assessment task, students are required to demonstrate their ability to:
- Critically assess and construct reasoned arguments about the core philosophical views on meaning and purpose of education.
- Debate the merits of differing philosophies of education in relation to developments in Irish education.
- Construct their own opinion of what their philosophy of education is based on reflection on their own practice that considers the themes explored in the module.
- Understand and apply the moral and ethical debates in education to everyday practice.
Assessment Methodology
This module is assessed by Artefact 1: Reflection (20%) and Artefact 2: Academic Essay (70%).
Students are required to complete an essay to demonstrate their achievement of the learning outcomes in respect of this module.

Artefact 1 – Reflection (20%)
Based on the submissions you have completed in the forums and your learning in this course, write a 500-word reflection on what your personal philosophy of education is. Please link this reflection to your learning and practice. (Please keep to the word count)
Artefact 2 – Academic Essay (70%)
“Recently the Irish Government announced a new sex-education curriculum* to be delivered in Irish Schools to tackle sexual, gender, and domestic based violence in Irish Society.” Considering three philosophers you have studied in this course, critically evaluate the philosophical, ethical, and moral issues which might arise in the teaching of Relationships and Sexuality Education in Irish Schools using the lens of the arguments of those philosophers you have chosen.

i) Reflection
- The reflection piece must be 500 words.
ii) Academic Essay
- The Academic Essay must be 2,000 words (+/- 10%).
- The Academic Essay must clearly draw on content from the Philosophy of Education Module.
- For the Essay, provide at least five academic, peer-reviewed, and scholarly references from various published sources. The references MUST be included in a reference list that you will provide at the end of each writing task.
- You must adhere to the Hibernia College adapted Harvard Referencing style guide for proper referencing. The referencing guide can be accessed through the library website or by clicking here.
Academic Writing (10 marks)
Marks will be awarded for the quality of scholarly Academic Writing.
- The academic essay should be written in a formal academic tone using standard English.
- Present all work showing a good level of English with minimal errors.
Cognisance will also be taken of:
- Accuracy in spelling and punctuation, grammar, and syntax
- Clarity of thought and structure
- Evidence of reading/research
- Correct citations and referencing. Please refer to Hibernia College’s Academic Writing Toolkit on MyHELMS and the Hibernia College Referencing Guide, both for citations and for referencing.

Penalties
- Late submission: If you do not submit your assessment by 3:00 p.m. on the due date, you can make a late submission in the week following this, i.e., By 3:00 p.m. on the following Wednesday. If you make a late submission, a 10% penalty will be applied to your grade for this assessment.
- Failure to adhere to specified word limits in the critical essay: If you do not follow any word count or time limits set for this assessment, a 10% penalty will be applied to your grade for the relevant sections of this assessment.
- Non-submission of an assessment or uploading an incorrect document: You will receive a mark of zero (0), and you will be required to repeat this assessment. This will result in a delay in the issuance of results and may affect your course completion date and graduation.
Important: Where a student has to repeat an assignment due to non-submission or a fail, the module result will be capped at a pass grade overall.
