Learning Outcomes

1. Describe the historical explanations of mental health and illness; the history of
   mental health nursing and the factors that have influenced its professional
   development and function in hospital and community settings.
2. Discuss the continuum of mental health-distress-illness.
3. Describe the concepts and application of wellness and resilience to mental health and the role of mental health nurses in promoting wellness and resilience.
4. Identify the factors that impact a person’s mental health and examine bio/medical, psycho-social, cultural, spiritual, and legal explanations of mental
   illness and distress.
5. Describe the classification of mental health problems using DSM-5 and ICD-10
6. Discuss how you would recognize: affective disorders, psychotic disorders, anxiety disorders, personality disorders, dementia, self-harm, and suicidal behavior.

• Language and diagnostic classification systems in mental health care and
  understanding the impact of receiving a diagnosis.
• The epidemiology, presentation, and impact of affective disorders, psychotic
  disorders, anxiety disorders, personality disorders, dementia, self-harm, and
  suicidal behavior.
• The effect of mental illness on service users and families, with specific emphasis on citizenship and social inclusion.
• Definitions and conceptualizations of psychiatric and mental health nursing and the philosophical and theoretical foundations underpinning mental health nursing practice that offer ways of understanding the nature of mental health and recovery.
• Using nursing process frameworks and conceptual and theoretical models for
  mental health nursing practice.
• Recovery principles, processes, and environments that support recovery in
  national and international contexts and understanding the importance of service user narratives and perspectives on recovery.
