Kevin Is A 21-Year-Old Inter-County Gaelic Player Who Takes The Free-Kicks: Sport Psychology Case Study, UOL, Ireland

University University of Limerick (UOL)
Subject Sport Psychology

Case Study

Kevin is a 21-year-old inter-county Gaelic player who takes the free-kicks for his team. He seems to be naturally very talented but his performance in competition is inconsistent especially in those games when his team is leading. In discussion with his coach, he admits to tending to lose his focus and get distracted when stepping up to take a free-kick, especially when trying to close out competitions. Recently, in the semi-finals of the League, he made the mistake of thinking too far ahead before his free-kick and as a result, missed the shot. This caused Kevin to experience lots of negative and irrelevant thoughts. Kevin wants to address his attention and focus in preparation for the upcoming Championship to help his team succeed.

  • Why might Kevin be experiencing these reductions in performance (include a theory to explain your reasoning)?
  • What applied intervention/s might you implement with Kevin to help improve her performance (include applied examples and explanations where relevant)?
