Inclined and vertical U-tube manometers are used to measure differential pressure in flow meters like pitot tubes, orifices, and nozzles.
Manometers are devices used to measure pressure by enclosing a column of liquid in a tube that may be either vertical or slanted. The water-filled U-tube manometer is widely used to determine the pressure differential at pilots or orifices in a ventilation or air-handling system (Zahariea, 2010).
The diagram below shows what happens to the water level in a U-tube when the left tube is linked to a greater pressure source than the right tube, such as when the left tube is attached to a pressured air duct while the right tube is exposed to the surrounding air.
