I will discuss what this research is about and its goals. This research has three substantial chapters. The first chapter focuses on protection and prevention. Therefore, the goal is to establish how the system can further protect victims and work on the prevention of gender–based violence against women in the first place. The second chapter investigates how the system as a whole deals with gender–based violence against women in terms of law, policy, and support structures within the legal system.

The goal is to take an empirical evidence-based approach, analyze the issues and barriers to this system and provide recommendations for combatting these issues. The third chapter will look at where the current system is inadequate and the effect of this, in particular, the effect on the victim.

With this in mind, it will investigate how the victim responds, whether the victim stays or leaves, and the consequences of this, the ultimate goal will be to investigate how the criminal justice system responds to victims who kill their abusers to escape. Therefore, the goal will be acknowledging the categories of defenses available but incorporating psychological responses to trauma, this being but not limited to Battered Women’s Syndrome. Each of these chapters will be discussed in turn throughout this proposal.
