The Excel file Urban Employment Profiles 2016 contains key economic data for all urban centres in Ireland with 10,000 or more population, as recorded by the 2016 Census of Population.
This includes the total population of each town or city in 2016, its rate of population growth between 2002 and 2011, and the percentage of the town’s residents that commutes to work outside the town. You are required to choose at least five urban areas and:
- Produce a graph (or graphs) comparing their employment profiles to a suitable ‘normative’ profile.
- Using Excel, calculate the Coefficient of Specialisation for each of the chosen urban areas. Present the results in the form of a table.
- Produce and present a graph (scatter diagram or X-Y plot) to show the relationship between the level of specialisation (Y-axis) and the size of the town (X-axis). Note that if Dublin or Cork are included in your chosen towns it will be necessary to use a logarithmic scale for the X-axis.
- Write a commentary (max 1,000) words to interpret your results. The commentary should deal with:
a. Your reasons for choosing the urban areas in question.
b. Interpretation of your findings in relation to
(i) sector(s) of specialisation;
(ii) degree of specialisation; and
(iii) the relationship between specialisation and size of the centre.
c. Other trends or patterns evident in the findings (e.g., are there differences in specialisation according to recent growth rate, the location, or the level of commuting from the town?). You may wish to produce additional graphics to aid with this exploration of the findings.
d. Factors that might account for the trends/patterns observed and described in b and c.
e. Implications of the results for the future growth prospects of the urban areas you have chosen.
f. Your reflections on the data and / or methodology for the analysis.
