ENGL 1106: It’s often been supposed that H G Wells’ “The Island of Dr Moreau” is in some sense a comment upon late Victorian society: Reading Friction Essay, DC, Ireland

University Douglas College (DC)
Subject ENGL 1106: Reading Friction

Question

It’s often been supposed that H. G. Wells’ “The Island of Dr. Moreau” is in some sense a “comment” upon late Victorian society’s understanding of Darwinian evolution; or alternatively, that is a critique of religion. But even if we think this is true, what does the novel as a whole story have to say or imply about these subjects? Do the two subjects even fit together within the single narrative structure? Finally, if we answer the last question “Yes”, what does that imply about Wells’ overall intent in creating the story in the first place?
