Drawing on the work of two designers, critically analyze the role of one of the following themes within contemporary design: sustainability, critical design, vernacular, and identity. Where does their work fit into contemporary design? What do you understand about the theme? Critically assess the work in terms of form, function, materiality, and design context. Reference the cultural/ political/ historical/ ideological milieu within which the designs developed.

You are expected to consult a broad range of academic sources (books, articles) rather than general websites: these are not suitable for essay research and should be avoided. Wikipedia will not be accepted as a source. A minimum of 10 academic sources are required.

Ensure that you are critical in your writing, and not just descriptive. It may be a good idea to compare & contrast the 2 examples.
Your bibliography should include all sources that you have consulted in researching the essay – books, articles, tours, podcasts, interviews, etc. Reference your essay using Harvard system. 10 academic sources should be used at a minimum.

Structure your essay, it should have 6 clear parts:
1. Title Page – including your name, chosen essay title, date of submission, word count, etc.
2. List of Illustrations/Images – with full references
3. Introduction – where you lay out what you propose to discuss – 10% of the essay
4. Main Body – this will comprise about 80% of the essay. Here is where you do what you
have outlined in your intro.
5. Conclusion – this should reflect on your essay rather than purely summarise – 10%
6. Bibliography – this is your reference list and should include reliable source material
