Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) Is A Complication Of Diabetes: Mixed Methods Research, OU, Ireland

University Oxford University (OU)
Subject Mixed Methods Research

Statement of the Problem

Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) is a complication of diabetes, characterized by a triad of hyperglycemia, ketonemia, and metabolic acidosis. It is due to an absolute or relative deficiency in insulin. DKA is a life-threatening emergency that can incur significant mortality if not diagnosed and treated promptly and has a high rate of incidence within Ireland.

Current guidelines to which pre-hospital practitioners in Ireland operate, do not give scope to distinguish between DKA and simple hyperglycemia thus giving rise to a situation whereby the most appropriate treatment may not be initiated in the most timely manner despite Irish Advanced Paramedics having the skills and underpinning knowledge to do so.

Purpose of this study

The proposed research project aims to develop evidence-based guidelines allowing for Irish Advanced Paramedics to appropriately distinguish diabetic ketoacidosis from simple hyperglycemia allowing better management of the condition. The study will look at in-hospital protocols utilized in the management of DKA from a pre-hospital feasibility viewpoint.
