Diabetes mellitus, more popularly known as diabetes, is a health disorder where there is an anomalous spike in the blood glucose level: Diabetes Dissertation, NUI, Ireland

University National University of Ireland (NUI)
Subject Diabetes

Diabetes mellitus, more popularly known as diabetes, is a health disorder where there is an anomalous spike in the blood glucose level. Glucose is regarded as the source of energy for a normal human body. Excessive levels of blood glucose are often attributed to a disorder in the particular type of hormone called insulin, which helps in the absorption of glucose by the cells for the production of energy.

When the human body is unable to produce the required amount of insulin, it often leads to diabetic conditions in the patients. The underlying symptoms of diabetes often go unnoticed which can often culminate into critical health problems such as organ failures, cognitive abilities of the brain, and much more. The prevalence of diabetes amongst the global population has increased gradually over the years.

In 1980 as per World Health Organisation data, the number of people affected by diabetes was outstanding at 108 million globally, while the same figures from 2019 show that approximately more than 460 million people globally are affected by diabetes and 1.5 million people have died due to health complications arising from diabetes. Projections from the current rate of diabetic disorder amongst the human population have shown that by 2045 approximately 700 million people would be affected by diabetes.
