Three Patient Scenarios

Patient Scenario 1

A 70-year-old female is admitted with a fractured neck of left femur following a fall at home She as scheduled for dynamic hip screw fixation. She is diabetic (type 11). well-controlled on oral hypoglycaemics (Glucophage – Metformin hydrochloride – 500mgs daily). Preoperatively she was mentally alert & was mobilizing with the aid of a zimmer frame.

Patient Scenario 2

A 65-year-old female is admitted with a Colles fracture She undergoes an open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF with a plate and screws) under general anesthetic and has a brace applied postoperatively. She has a history of hypertension controlled on Tritace 2 5mgs (Ramipril 2 5mgs).

Patient Scenario 3

A 55-year-old male is admitted following a fall in which he sustained a fracture of the shaft of the humerus. Open reduction and internal fixation is planned He is a smoker, with a history of COP currently managed with nebulized Ventolin and Pulmicort.

Introduction

Introduce the patient noting the relevant complexities of the injury and their history and the impact of that relevant history on the patient and their recovery from the injury.
