Introduction

The assessment of one’s abilities depends on how one demonstrates the skills as per their activities. I have assessed my skills in designing arts and crafts activities for children with special needs to stimulate their mental and physical growth. The activity requires improving the logical thinking of the children along with improving their movement of the body parts (de Chantal and Markovits, 2017). The study aims to identify the overall planning of the activity with the rationale as well as the implementation of the plan. It will provide the key issues and revised activities in the case of enhancing the choices of alternating the planning of certain activities for the overall development of the children.

The strand or element of the curriculum for the chosen activity:
The National Council for Special Education (NCSE) guidelines and the Department of Education and Skills (DES) guidelines supported the implementation of the arts and crafts activity for children in the early years of setting. I highly believe in the importance of curriculum in planning any activity for any child. During the planning and preparation, the first step that I followed was to evaluate different elements of the early childhood curriculum. In Ireland, especially most important, a curriculum framework such as Aistear (National Curriculum Framework) and Siolta (National Quality Framework) are relevant for early childhood education (Aistear-Siolta Practice Guide 2022).

These two frameworks support the child with special needs to meet all the development requirements in early education. Aistear and Siolta both focus on the holistic well-being of a child with or without disabilities. The Siolta framework 6 resembles play (6.1, 6.2, 6.3, 6.4, 6.5, and 6.6) in early childhood education. These elements support effortless learning in early childhood with the support of play (Aistear-Siolta Practice Guide 2022). The play-based activity on the arts and crafts has been designed to meet all these elements in the Siolta framework.
