You are required to produce a record of your learning of topics in Special Needs and Special Needs Assisting. This record should describe your learning on:

  • The general role of the SNA as laid out by the DES and a discussion of how the role adapts in relation to the individual needs of the student(s) in the care of the SNA
  • The qualities and skills required to work with children with disabilities. Discuss the special attributes of an effective SNA
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation associated with disability, to include a discussion on the rights of the child in the learning context.

The following will guide your discussion:

1. The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989)

2. The EPSEN Act (2004)

3. The Disability Act (2005)

4. The Equal Status Act (2009)

Your record should your learning of how to work effectively with children with disabilities, using any experience you may have and challenges faced. If there is no direct experience in special needs, use your knowledge of theory to inform your description.

Write a reflection of your learning, both class\study based and any practical experience of working with children, their parents, and colleagues.
