PART B – Case Study:
Using a case study of your choice from work experience, without disclosing any personal or private information, examine the impact of the following issues in relation to providing care.
TASK 1 – Case Study Outline
Give a brief account of the case study of your choice.
TASK 2 – Activities of Daily Living (Roper, Logan & Tierney)
Identify two ADLs that your case study client requires assistance to carry out, giving a rationale for any assistance given.
- Refer to 2 activities of daily living and how you, as a carer, assist the client
- Explain what is an ADL and why they are used as an assessment tool
- Giving a rationale for each example is important – this means explaining how and why you offer assistance, e.g. how the assistance you provide supports the client’s dignity and their independence in an empathetic and respectful way
TASK 4 – Reporting
Based on your case study client, describe how and to whom a carer should report changes in the client’s condition.
- You need to show your understanding of the reporting structures in your organisation
- Note who a carer would report a concern to, and whether it is inside or outside the organisation
- Include a variety of ways to promote effective lines of communication, e.g. reporting to superiors, communicate
- on diaries, care plans, family members, and HIQA

Task 5
Examine ways to support the physical, emotional, spiritual, social and psychological needs of your case study client.
- It is useful to refer to the Dimensions of Wellness framework
- Using a minimum of 2 specific examples, explain how some of the client’s needs can be met using the Dimensions of Wellness as a reference guide
TASK 6 – Personal care
Examine the personal hygiene needs of your case study client and discuss a range of equipment, sensory and mobility aids likely to be used to support a client.
- Show an understanding of the personal hygiene needs of the client
- It is important to make reference to safety, hygiene, how to manage soiled linen, how to clean equipment and ways to prevent the spread of infection using the best cleaning practices
- Demonstrate an understanding of a variety of equipment that can be used to support an individual receiving care, e.g. by listing the equipment used by your study client (a standing hoist or full hoist, a rollator / walking aid…) and then noting the ways or strategies used to clean these items and how to prevent the spread of infection if these items become soiled
