Case Study
John is 3 years old and lives at home with his parents and younger brother, Michael, who is a very happy contented 8 month old baby. John’s father is an engineer and his mother is a nurse. Both his parents work long hours and his father is away on business a lot of the time. His mother felt very depressed after her last pregnancy but did not tell anybody this. She has only recently returned to work. She feels very stressed and finds it difficult to juggle a career and looking after 2 small children. John’s behaviour can be very challenging at times and she finds it difficult to know how to deal with him. The family employed a nanny when John’s mother returned to work. Prior to this John was cared for by his mother and he is very attached to her.
The family live in a large house in the country with a big secure garden and John has lots of toys to play with. There are no children John’s age living nearby. His grandparents live locally. They see John very frequently and bring him on outings to the local park and cinema regularly. He is very close to them and loves the time he spends with them. They tend to spoil John and give him whatever he wants. When John’s parents are not working they all spend time together as a family and his parents have a loving relationship.
John’s language is poor for his age and he has difficulty expressing himself through speech. This can be very frustrating for him. He often has temper tantrums and throws things around.
John’s mother would like to enrol him in the local pre-school but is not sure if he is ready for the long day and for the discipline school requires. She also feels that his problem with speech would be a huge disadvantage to him. His father disagrees and feels it would benefit him greatly.
You are part of the family support team who will be helping this family through their present difficulties. You have been asked to focus on supporting John and his family.
