Examine the following imaginary case study of a young woman housed in the workhouse in 1890. Date: Mary is a 23 year old woman who is living in the workhouse, she is categorized as an “idiot”- unable to protect her self against basic physical danger. she has lived in the workhouse for the past 8 years. As a young child she lived with her parents and siblings and while they were poor they had enough to survive, while at home Mary was able to help with growing and harvesting potatoes on their small patch of land. However Mary’s father has since died and her mother and older sister have taken up domestic work in a local landlord estate. Her two brothers have moved away and may be living in England. Mary has no contact with her family. she spends most of her day wondering around the workhouse, she appears unkempt and has very limited communication skills, she has been deemed “unfit for work”.
