Purpose of this module:

This module aims to develop the learners understanding and
enhance their knowledge of inclusivity, equality and diversity in ELC practice in Ireland.
Learners will explore their understanding of inclusivity, equality and diversity as well as
examining theories and approaches to equality and diversity. They will address barriers and
challenges to providing inclusivity, equality and diversity in practice and explore practical
strategies that support all children’s participation. They will critically analyse the evolution and
impact of policy and legislation on inclusivity, equality and diversity in ELC and develop an
inclusion policy.

 

Minimum Intended Module Learning Outcomes (MIMLOs)

On Completion of this module learners will be able to:

1. Critically evaluate inclusivity, equality and diversity terminology and concepts
relevant to the ELC sector in Ireland.

2. Differentiate between approaches to diversity education including assimilation,
multicultural, intercultural, and anti-bias.

3. Recognising barriers and challenges to inclusivity, equality, and diversity in ELC
and develop strategies that support all children.

4. Apply best practice guidelines to equality proof an ELC environment that support
all children and their families.

5. Demonstrate competence in the design of policies and procedures around
inclusion, equality, and diversity.

6. Understand the role of the ELC professional in supporting inclusivity, equality and
diversity.

7. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the responsibilities of a mandated
person in line with current child safeguarding legislation and guidelines within the
ELC environment.

Format: Learners are required to complete a research based
assignment that demonstrates the learner’s knowledge of the role of the early childhood
professional in providing an environment and curriculum that critical evaluates and supports
inclusivity, equality, and diversity in an ELC setting.

• Your assignments should be adequately referenced. Refer to the Harvard
Referencing Guidelines at the beginning of your Course Notes or in your Learner
Support Module for more information on how to correctly use intext citations and
compiling a bibliography.

• Each assignment will need to be presented with a cover page, signed authorship
statement, table of content, main body of work and one bibliography at the end of
your assignment.

• You can use either Times New Roman or Ariel Font (size 12) with 1.5 line spacing.

Part Two (40 marks) – learners are required to design and develop an inclusion policy for
an ELC setting.

Introduction and Context (5 marks).

Detailed planning and collaboration (5 marks).
Provide detailed information with appropriate structure and layout (30 marks).

• Introduction (a general overview of the policy).

• A policy statement.

• Policy objectives.

• A list of guiding principles and equal opportunities.

• Roles and responsibilities of all stakeholders. Including partnership with families and
collaboration with external agencies.
