📚 Unit 18 Assessment B Proposal – Becoming an Educator
Aims of the Session:
- To gain an understanding regarding what is required for Assessment B
- How to meet the relevant learning outcome
- How to present a proposal for action research
📖 Assessment Tasks
This module has three assessment components:
- Assessment A (Unit 6): An e-portfolio of tasks
- Assessment B (This Unit): A proposal for a small-scale action research project
- Assessment C (Unit 21): A reflective essay (1500 words)
The various components will be due on different dates, so please check your calendar and note the deadlines!
📝 Learning Outcomes for Assessment B
The completed proposal must address LO5.
- Reflect on their learning and professional experiences to enhance professional identity.
- Demonstrate ability to evaluate and plan for development of study skills and monitor achievement.
- Demonstrate ability to source and manage appropriate information.
- Show competence in referencing other people’s work in a precise and systematic way.
- Apply knowledge about major principles and concepts of research to design a coherent and ethically appropriate small-scale research project.
- Articulate and critically reflect on the impact of learning on the development of their professional values.
📅 Important Information for Assessment B
- Proposal is due in Week 20
- Worth 30% of the overall module grade
- Must address Learning Outcome 5
- Word Count: 1000 words (+/- 10%, so proposal must be between 900-1100 words)
📚 Assessment B: Proposal
In Assessment B, you will demonstrate your knowledge and ability to use basic research methods ethically to initiate changes to practice and consultation in your setting.
The proposal will be based on an aspect of practice within your setting. The structure of the proposal should follow a clear format:
❓ Research Question
Start by stating a central research question. Consider the following to form your question:
- What do you want to find out?
- Observe, reflect, and collaborate with your team to arrive at the question.
- Ask open-ended questions such as: What, why, or how?
Ask yourself:
- Is this research manageable?
- Will it make a meaningful and positive difference in your setting?
📋 Proposal Structure
Ensure your proposal includes the following sections:
💡 Rationale and Context (Approx. 200 words)
- State the rationale and aims of the proposed research.
- Provide brief contextual information about your setting.
- Explain the significance of this research (personal, professional, and academic relevance).
- Provide information about your setting and the sample used (research participants, approach, etc.).
📚 Literature Review (Approx. 300 words)
In this section, you will explore theories, previous research, and literature on your research topic. You must demonstrate your understanding without including your own opinion or links to your setting. Choose two academic sources and discuss relevant theories and research findings.
🧑🔬 Proposed Research Design (Methodology) (Approx. 300 words)
- State what action research is and justify why it is the most suitable approach for your research.
- Explain the importance of the action research cycle.
- Identify the values underpinning your proposed study and discuss your position within the research.
- Discuss the data collection tools you are proposing and justify your choices with relevant literature.
- Discuss the importance of a reflective journal in action research and why it’s essential.
📊 Data Analysis (Approx. 80 words)
Consider how you will analyze the data you collect. Discuss the approach, steps, and reasoning behind the data analysis process.
⚖️ Ethics (Approx. 150 words)
Ethics must be a core part of your research. Address the following points:
- Transparency
- Informed consent
- Voluntary participation
- Right to withdraw
- Confidentiality and anonymity
- No harm principle, children’s rights, data protection, bias
Support your actions with relevant literature.
📚 Reference List
References must follow the Harvard Referencing System as per Portobello Institute guidelines.
