1. ‘Communities have been recognised in both the Ottawa and Bangkok Charters as central to the work of health promotion. Critically discuss the potential of communities / community-led organisations to actively lead or actively contribute to the creation of better determinants of health; your discussion should address both the strengths and limitations of communities / community-led organisations in this regard. Use examples to illustrate your arguments.
2. The concepts of ‘Healthy Public Policy’ and more recently ‘Health in All Policies’, are central to Health Promotion. Based on a country of your choice and its political decision-making processes, discuss a public policy change (not already in place) for which you would advocate to reduce health inequity. In the detailed discussion identify the following: – why this policy change is required, and, in theory, what could be achieved if it was implemented. – describe how you would advocate for it and what evidence you would use – identify which other sectors or agencies you would seek to partner with, to build support for policy change. – identify where opposition to this policy change could come from and outline how you would attempt to counter this opposition. Where possible, use examples of successful policy change to support your points.

3. Critically discuss the significance of culture and ethnic minority status as determinants of health and consider how those working to promote health can use an appreciation of them to enhance the appropriateness and effectiveness of their work. Use at least 3 examples to illustrate your arguments.
4. The ‘settings’ approach is strongly advocated within Health Promotion. Describe and critically discuss this approach and its potential, or otherwise, to achieve sustainable improvements in health determinants and health outcomes. Use at least 3 examples of different settings to illustrate your arguments. (You’re not allowed to use any settings presented in substantial detail in a lecture).
