Introduction
It is well recognized among colleagues and publicized in the media that people engaged in the Health Services industry suffer high rates of burnout, due to work over load and inconsistent work schedules. However, what is less documented is the supports identified which contribute to a reduction in the incidence of burnout. There have been a number of interventions proposed within many services aimed at supporting staff in order to reduce burnout. This Dissertation will explore the evidence that supports the usefulness of Reflective Practice Groups (RPG) in Healthcare Settings towards a reduction of staff burnout.
The term burnout was introduced to Human Service Industries by Masslach in 1997 (Masslach et al, 1997). She describes burnout as an occupational syndrome which has three components, stress due to exhaustion, cynical attitude to one’s job and a view of oneself of being ineffective. The WHO, in 2019, defined it as an occupational “syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed,” (WHO, 2019)
Reflective Practice Groups (RPGs) generally operate as experiential, allowing members to discuss the impact of their work on themselves and hear from other members, they are often intradepartmental and facilitated by experienced group facilitators, who may be employed in the same service. Dewey writing on considerations for educators, likens Reflection to looking underneath a stone to see what is underneath and what it covers so that nothing gets overlooked (Dewey, 1910, P56 ). The Tavistock Insititute, London, advertising Reflective Practice programmes describe them as an invaluable opportunity for people to explore tricky issues in a supportive environment. It suggests that group members develop “a deeper sense of self and personal resilience as well as establishing a community of supportive peers”.
