Mark Doyle has recently been appointed factory manager of Looney’s Ltd. A furniture company employing fifty people and located in the Northwest. The company is not a member of an employer organization and, while unionized, the union is not particularly active. In the past, the company has had a number of negative experiences with employment legislation, on taking up the position the directors made it clear to Mark that although they wanted him to run a tight ship, they did not want to lose any more employment law cases. Mark’s predecessor had left unexpectedly. Mark has heard through the grapevine that his predecessor had been ‘encouraged to leave because of the negative publicity associated with the loss of employment law cases – the directors had been embarrassed by local press coverage.
