Steel is one of the most used metals in today’s society. It’s affordable, tough, and extremely versatile. Steel is the second largest mass-produced commodity after cement, with a global manufacturing rate of around 1,800 million tonnes per year. The main ingredient in the make-up of steel is iron ore which is first mined. There are approximately 2,000 million tonnes of iron ore mined each year of which 95 percent of this is used in the steel industry.
The annual global steel produced today has increased 10-fold since 1950 from 189 million tons to where it’s at today which is just over 1,800 million tons, to put this into perspective that equates to 57 tonnes of steel produced every second in the year. Steel is made when iron ore is melted down to remove impurities and carbon is added, using one of two main processes steel is made by either a Blast Furnace or an Electric Arc Furnace (EAF).
