The design and construction of buildings in Ireland are regulated under the Building Control Acts 1990 to 2014. The “Building Control Regulations” 1997 provide for matters of procedure, administration, and control for the purposes of securing the implementation of, and compliance with, the requirements of the Building Regulations.

The important control mechanisms include Notices; Applications; Declarations; Certificates and the Statutory Building Control Register. The Building Control Regulations S.I. 9 of 2014, S.I. 365 of 2015, and S.I. 229 of 2021 prescribe the administrative procedures and provide for use of the Building Control Management System as the preferred means of Building Control administration.

The measures provide for the following control mechanisms:

  1. 7-day notice in respect of the commencement of certain works
  2. Regularisation certificate
  3. Revised fire safety certificate
  4. Disability access certificate
  5. Revised disability access certificate
