Introduction
Nordic Entertainment Group (NENT Group) launched in Sweden in 2007 their premium online streaming service and on-demand called Viaplay. Providing streaming services in 11European countries with more than 100 original tiles, the group is rapidly expanding to an additional 5 new markets by the end of 2023. The expansion goes well beyond new markets including the acquisition of all international sports rights, with agreements on innovative partnerships and heavily investing in original content.
According to Boujol (2021), Viaplay is one of the only European streaming services capable to compete with Netflix and other American streaming groups like Disney+, Amazon Prime, etc. The global pandemic shifted the market of subscriptions, and for the first time ever there are more paid subscribers for streaming services than are customers payment for pay-tv services. With very few European companies more than 86% of the overall subscription number (141 million) is going to the American streaming service providers.
