Subject | Personal Development |
Competency-based interviews are based on the premise that past behaviors are a good indicator of future behaviors and are used as a way for interviewers to get evidence of a candidate’s potential.
The competency-based interview is used extensively in all sectors. As you approach graduation in the Summer of 2022 you may be looking for a job, hoping to get a place on a graduate program, or looking to apply for a master’s program.
Even if you have already secured a position, being able to interview well will be critical to your career progression. Therefore, the purpose of this assignment is to give you some practice in preparing for a competency-based interview.
This assignment requires you to use STAR or SHARE techniques discussed in class to help you to prepare for a competency-based interview. In an interview, you might be asked to give examples or evidence of several competencies, but for the purpose of this assignment, you need only select one competency.
1. Identify a specific competence that you would like to explore.
2. Identify one incident from your own experience which required you to draw on that competence to affect the outcome.
3. Review the STAR/SHARE technique to make sure that you recall all the relevant information relating to the example you have chosen.
4. Use theories and frameworks found in academic literature(a minimum of three quality academic articles) to interpret your experience. The published academic literature provides us with the scientific evidence with which to interpret and understand our experiences.
For the second part, you can ask a friend or relative to help you. Tell them that you want to ask them one interview question. Then ask them to recall an incident when they had to draw on competency to affect an outcome.
It does not have to be the same competency as you described. The objective is to have you experience the story from an interviewer’s perspective. How did your interviewee’s account come across?
What aspects of the interviewee’s answer would you try to emulate in an interview?
What aspects of the interviewee’s answer would you do differently and why? Providing simply a narrative of the incident or a transcript of the interview you carried out is however not enough -you also have to analyze your findings and reflect on them.
