Describe A Real System That You Are Familiar With Where Mathematical Programming: Operations Modelling Assignment, UOL, Ireland

1. Describe a real system that you are familiar with where mathematical programming is covered in Chapter 3 can be used.

2. From the real system description develop a mathematical model that will show how a model can be used to optimize aspects of the real system. Develop a mathematical model that has a minimum of 4 variables. The purpose here is to demonstrate how such a model could be used. List here any assumptions used in developing the model;

3. Attempt to gather information from the real system, if possible. If not, use information from examples observed in journal papers or similar data such as books on Operations Research (OR). If this is not possible one can also use similar (but not the same data) used in the models presented in the notes for this module. Importantly, cite any material you researched to find suitable data and provide a short note on each source (1-2 sentences), stating why you did use the data i.e., using different assumptions, combined with another solutions procedure, etc.;

4. Write out the mathematical model and explain how the model works. This can be done using a legible pen and included in the pdf document;

5. Solve the model using Excel; Write out a report that will provide the answers to results from the model:

• What is the objective function optimizing;
• Value of the variables and use of resources;
• Binding and non-binding constraints.

In addition use sensitivity analysis to report on at least 4 elements of the following:

• Coefficients of objective function allowable increase/decrease;
• Shadow price with allowable increase/decrease;
• Reduced cost;
• 100% rule and pricing out rule.
