Aim
The apprentice must undertake a project that will result in the elimination of the root cause of a manufacturing problem.
Scope
The scope of the project will range over an assembly line or value stream.
The problem chosen for the project should involve sufficient interaction of technology, procedures, and people so that the apprentice can develop an understanding of the system’s View. This will expose the learner to the reality of life as an engineer, where most problems are not simply technical but have many dimensions and many possible solutions.
Likewise, the solution of the project will involve an interdisciplinary team, so the apprentice appreciates that many skill-sets and perspectives are needed to solve the most complex engineering problems.
It will be addressing a problem that has a direct impact on the customer. This will help to give the apprentice the understanding of the importance of customer service, integrity, ethics – care for the environment and for society, and quality.

This will involve using the Six Sigma DMAIC problem-solving methodology and techniques, even if these are not currently employed by other engineers in the company.
At this level, there will be more innovation by the student and evaluation of their own work.
Integration with other modules
This project will incorporate the use of some tools which have been given as assessments in the Six Sigma Green Belt module (20%) and the Project management module (20%).
Role
The student is expected to play a significant role in a team, or to lead the team.
The learner will use skills in problem-solving, creative thinking, logical thinking and reasoning, data recording, data analysis, numeracy, and ICT. They will also foster an appreciation of the importance of rigor and attention to detail.
They will need to act with less guidance than during their Year 2 Technical Project. This will help develop apprentices who are prepared to take ownership and responsibility for their work; who are self-starters and independent, capable of acting on the initiative, and conducting their own investigations and research. Used correctly, these tasks will foster curiosity, optimism, resourcefulness, resilience, and reflection. They will also need to organize elements of their own work schedules, which will develop their time management, dependability, and decision making.
