1. Introduction to the Organisation/Department

Give information regarding the company here. Nothing proprietary needs to be included.  Explain if the company uses Lean Sigma or Continuous Improvement and if so some background on the “knowledge” in the company of the system of DMAIC or other system users.  Explain if you have done any projects or had any involvement previously.

2. Introduction to the Improvement Opportunity

2.1.  Improvement opportunity background

Give any information that explains the background of the area of improvement.  This can be supported by pictures or diagrams related to the area selected.  This section should explain any acronyms known and used in the area for outsiders.  This is not the “detail” of the problem but an explanation of the department/process where the problem is so that the reader can understand the area if they are not familiar with it.

2.2. Reasons you selected this improvement.

This section should explain why you decided that you would use this area for improvement.   What does it mean to you and your colleagues to see this improvement tackled?  Why is it important for the company to tackle it?

Some background on Lean Sigma and DMAIC/DMADV to show you understand it.

4. D Define (Student demonstration of tools used)

How would you “sell” the project to management so that they will have the resources in place to get it fixed? Explain how you and the team developed the Problem Statement and Goal Statement.  Show the way that the statements might have changed as you learned more from the information you gathered and reviewed to understand the “scale” of the problem.  Explain any Lean Sigma tools you used and show them.

5. M Measure (student demonstration of tools used)

Explain the use of data collection, how you identified the KPI’s.  Explain any tools you used such as process maps, Gemba, SIPOC etc.  Give the reason you did what you did.

6. An Analyse (student demonstration of tools used)

Explain the use of data analysis that you used and explain any tools you used such as trends charts, run charts, Pareto etc. Show and explain what you did.  Give the reason you did it.

Now that you have explained what you did, clearly show the final project Charter key elements here.  This should include the final problem and goal statements in the correct format.  You should show the team members and sponsor.  You can include your organization format if one exists, however, ensure that the taught format is used also.

8. Lessons learned completing the Charter

Explain what you learned in completing the Define part of the DMAIC cycle.

9. Further Actions, (Optional)

Finally, if you have progressed further than the charter you can include how you have progressed in FurtherActions as a final section.  Most organizations will want you to complete your selected project.  If at any stage in doing this that you need guidance please feel free to email us with questions.
